Base identifies consensus issue as it returns online after 2-hour outage
Base, Coinbase’s Ethereum layer-2 network, came back online after a nearly two-hour outage caused by a consensus problem that stopped block production. The network first flagged unhealthy block production, then identified an invalid block that prevented new blocks from being created. Base later said blockbuilding had recovered, ecosystem infrastructure had resynced, and a full post-mortem would follow. Jesse Pollack said user funds were safe, but the halt was unacceptable and should improve the platform. The outage was unusual for a major blockchain and followed a prior brief Base downtime in August 2025. It happened separately from, but just before, the scheduled Beryl upgrade, which was intended to reduce withdrawal delays and add a new token standard for real-world assets and stablecoins.
