Being right about Bitcoin won’t save your 3x leveraged ETF position
The SEC approved listing rules for VS Trust’s proposed 3x Bitcoin and Ethereum funds, bringing them closer to trading, though filings say they have not yet launched. The funds target three times the benchmark’s daily return, not its return over longer periods. Daily resetting can cause losses during volatile markets even if the underlying asset later returns to its starting price, though sustained rallies can amplify gains. The products use futures, so contract roll costs can further affect performance. Filings list a 1.85% annual management fee, estimated breakeven returns, and partnership tax reporting via Schedule K-1. They may suit informed short-term traders, but prolonged holding can produce results far different from simply multiplying Bitcoin’s or Ethereum’s overall gain by three; investors could lose their entire investment.
