Biggest Crypto Hacks of All Time
The crypto sector has faced over $10 billion in hacks and scams in the past five years, with six of the last eleven years recording losses exceeding $1 billion. The largest hack occurred in February 2025, where over 400,000 Ethereum, valued at $1.4 billion, were stolen from Dubai-based exchange Bybit, linked to North Korea's Lazarus Group. Bybit managed to cover the loss through loans and deposits. Other significant hacks include Poly Network's $611 million loss in 2021, Binance Coin's $570 million exploit in 2022, and Coincheck's $530 million theft in 2018. Ronin Network also suffered a $552 million hack in March 2022, attributed to Lazarus. Despite these incidents, many exchanges have implemented measures to recover funds and enhance security.
