Bitcoin BIP-361 Draft Puts Quantum Security Back On The Agenda
BIP-361 is a draft Bitcoin proposal, “Post Quantum Migration and Legacy Signature Sunset,” aimed at preparing Bitcoin for a future where some current signature schemes could be vulnerable to quantum computing. It does not claim Bitcoin is under immediate threat; instead, it argues that migration planning must begin early because Bitcoin upgrades are slow and require broad consensus. The proposal outlines a phased transition away from legacy signatures toward quantum-resistant alternatives, so users, wallets, exchanges, custodians, and miners have time to adapt. The main challenge is balancing security with usability and fairness, especially for dormant, lost, or long-unused coins tied to older address types. The draft is important mainly as a starting point for discussion. It does not activate any rule changes, and it should not be treated as a short-term market signal. Its significance is that Bitcoin’s developer community is beginning to map out how to handle a major long-term cryptographic risk without disrupting the network.
