Bitcoin dev says OP_RETURN to get limit bump in next update
A Bitcoin software update, Bitcoin Core 30, scheduled for October 30, will increase the OP_RETURN function's data limit from 80 bytes to 4 megabytes. This change, supported by 31 Bitcoin Core developers, aims to allow more images, text, and documents on the blockchain. The OP_RETURN function previously enabled various uses, including non-fungible tokens and historical document storage. The update has sparked controversy, with critics arguing it could lead to blockchain spam and detract from Bitcoin's primary focus on peer-to-peer transactions. Some community members express loss of faith in Bitcoin Core development, citing concerns over systemic risks and market share decline. Bitcoin Core's dominance among Bitcoin nodes has dropped from approximately 98% to about 88% since the proposal's introduction, with the Bitcoin Knots client gaining market share. Concerns about long-term implications for Bitcoin Core's market position have been raised.
