Bitcoin ETF Options Introduction Marks Milestone, Despite Position Limits
BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) launched options on Nasdaq, achieving over $2 billion in notional trading value on its first day. IBIT's market cap is $44 billion, with the ETF trading over $4 billion in volume, ranking behind only SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust, Invesco QQQ Trust, and iShares Russell 2000 ETF. Analyst Eric Balchunas noted the significant day-one performance but indicated it hasn't yet rivaled top ETFs. IBIT options have a position limit of 25,000 contracts, tighter than traditional finance. Jeff Park criticized the treatment of bitcoin ETFs, highlighting that exercisable risk is only 0.5% of IBIT’s shares compared to the industry standard of 7%. Despite regulatory constraints, Bitcoin reached new highs above $94,000. Options open interest surpassed $40 billion, while futures open interest stands at $60 billion. U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs saw a net inflow of $816.4 million, totaling $28.5 billion in net inflows.
