Bitcoin Layer-2 Network Botanix Launches Mainnet, Touts Decentralization 'From the Start'
Botanix, a Bitcoin-based layer-2 blockchain, launched its mainnet, aiming to support decentralized finance (DeFi) applications by integrating aspects of Ethereum's design with Bitcoin. The network facilitates trading, lending, borrowing, and staking exclusively in Bitcoin. Founded in 2023, Botanix is decentralized from inception, with a federation of 16 independent node operators, including Galaxy Digital and Fireblocks. Key decentralized applications on Botanix include Dolomite and GMX. Botanix is described as an "EVM-equivalent" network, allowing Ethereum developers to port applications without modifications. Bitcoin serves as the gas token and settlement layer, promoting an endogenous Bitcoin finance ecosystem. The launch coincides with the introduction of "Bitcoin 2100," a browser-based game that educates users on Bitcoin's programmability while allowing them to earn small amounts of Bitcoin. Bitcoin currently holds about 62% of the crypto market's value, with Botanix aiming to enhance its utility beyond mere holding.
