Bithumb hack leaks staff data and regulators launch raid
South Korea’s Financial Services Commission, Financial Supervisory Service and Financial Security Institute began on-site inspections after Bithumb reported abnormal external access exposing information in a staff-support system. Bithumb said the system is separate from core crypto-trading infrastructure. Regulators said no leak of information usable for fraudulent payments or crypto transfers, including wallet addresses, had been confirmed, while checks for customer-data exposure remain ongoing. The FSC said it would oversee full compensation if consumers are harmed. It also outlined plans to strengthen cybersecurity and incident response at crypto firms and other sectors outside the Electronic Financial Transactions Act, aiming for safeguards comparable to those at major financial institutions. The notice did not establish new requirements or a timeline.
