Blockchain Apps Have Failed to Win Over the Masses, Ethereum Builders Admit
Over a decade of development, crypto has produced robust technological infrastructure but has failed to deliver user-friendly products that appeal to mainstream users. At ETH Denver, leaders John Paller and Zac Williamson noted that while Web3 promised decentralized alternatives to everyday digital tools, it has not replaced existing centralized apps, largely due to poor user experience, technical barriers, and lack of clear consumer benefits. Blockchain products are not cheaper, faster, or better than current solutions, and the requirement for users to navigate wallets and private keys deters widespread adoption. Crypto’s reputation is further damaged by its association with scams and speculation. For mainstream adoption, crypto must be integrated invisibly into familiar applications, providing clear improvements over Web2 alternatives. Both founders argue that the industry must focus on meaningful, value-driven products, rather than speculative or complex technologies. The current market downturn is seen as an opportunity for Web3 developers to shift their focus toward building genuinely useful applications instead of reinforcing negative stereotypes.
