California signs into law restrictions banning public officers from issuing crypto meme coins
Summary
California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed AB 2409, barring covered state and local officers and certain government employees from issuing meme coins. Separately, digital-asset providers may not list for California residents qualifying meme coins issued on or after Jan. 1, 2027, when offered by or in partnership with specified federal, state or local officials. The law defines covered officials, employees, issuance and meme coins, and authorizes the California attorney general to seek injunctions and disgorgement; local prosecutors may pursue remedies for the direct issuance ban. President Donald Trump’s 2025 coin predates the listing rule’s threshold.
