CFTC exodus: Fourth commissioner to depart 'later this year'
Kristin Johnson of the CFTC plans to leave the agency later this year after completing her term, which ended in April. She has served since March 2022, filling a Democratic seat. Johnson highlighted her role in the Market Risk Advisory Committee, addressing issues related to decentralized financial products and digital assets. Her departure may precede the nomination and Senate confirmation of a replacement by President Trump. Other commissioners, Summer Mersinger and Christy Goldsmith Romero, are also set to resign soon. One CFTC seat has been vacant since February. Johnson's exit could lead to a complete leadership change at the CFTC by 2026, with Trump’s nominees potentially taking over. The CFTC and SEC are managing regulatory issues concerning digital assets, but there are calls for clearer regulations to define their roles in the market.
