Coinbase Escalates SEC Fight Over the Agency's Inside Chatter on ETH
Coinbase Inc. is intensifying its legal battle against the SEC regarding the agency's refusal to release documents about its stance on Ethereum's ether (ETH) and other tokens as potential illegal securities. Coinbase hired History Associates Inc. to file a Freedom of Information Act request, which the SEC initially denied, citing an ongoing investigation. Following this, Coinbase sued the SEC, and History Associates plans to seek a court order to compel document release, arguing that the SEC's reasons for denial may no longer apply. Coinbase's Chief Legal Officer emphasized that internal communications should be public. The company is also engaged in multiple legal disputes with the SEC, including accusations of operating an illegal securities business and a petition for crypto-specific regulations. These ongoing legal challenges could shape the future of the digital assets industry in the U.S.
