Coinbase hacker trolls ZachXBT onchain after $42.5M THORChain swap
The hacker responsible for the Coinbase data breach taunted blockchain investigator ZachXBT with an onchain message after swapping $42.5 million from Bitcoin to Ether. The message included “L bozo” and a meme video. The breach affected at least 69,400 users, with stolen data including personal information. Following the breach, attackers demanded a $20 million ransom in Bitcoin, which Coinbase refused, instead offering a bounty for information on the hackers. The financial impact of the breach is estimated between $180 million and $400 million. Coinbase faces multiple lawsuits for inadequate security measures. The hacker used THORChain for the swap, which is under scrutiny for facilitating illicit transactions, particularly following a significant hack linked to North Korea’s Lazarus Group. A THORChain developer resigned after a vote to block transactions related to Lazarus was overturned.
