Coldcard hack sparks biggest sub-1 BTC move since FTX: CryptoQuant
Small Bitcoin transfers have surged to their highest daily level since the FTX collapse, with 39,600 BTC moved in transactions below 1 BTC. The jump came amid an ongoing suspected Coldcard wallet hack that has prompted users to move funds and renewed debate over Bitcoin self-custody. Researchers say the attack remains active and has unfolded in multiple waves. Galaxy Digital estimates the latest wave drained another 207.7 BTC, bringing total losses to about 1,367 BTC across 4,585 addresses, worth roughly $88.6 million. Security researchers urged anyone using Coldcard-generated addresses to move funds immediately. The incident has split opinion: some argue it shows the value of self-custody because users can react quickly, while others say it highlights risks in wallet software and strengthens the case for ETFs or other custodial options.
