Crypto exchanges tout cold storage ratios after Binance attack
Following a reported attack on Binance’s hot-wallet infrastructure, exchanges disclosed how much customer crypto they keep in cold storage. Gate said 88.26% of its assets are cold-stored and that this reserve could cover 104.58% of customer assets, though its figures are still under independent review. Coinbase reported holding more than 99% of customer assets offline; Upbit reported 99.17% as of September 2026. OKX said it holds over 95% in cold wallets, while South Korean peers reported ratios from about 80.5% to 94.8%. The figures use different reporting periods and asset calculations, so they are not directly comparable. Cold storage ratios are only one measure of security: compromised signing systems, access controls or staff can put offline wallets at risk too.
