Crypto Exec Formerly Detained in Nigeria Quits Binance
Tigran Gambaryan resigned from Binance on June 6, 2024, after being detained in Nigeria for eight months. He plans to remain in the crypto industry, focusing on aiding law enforcement with digital asset compliance. Gambaryan and fellow executive Nadeem Anjarwalla were arrested in February 2024 on charges of money laundering and tax evasion related to Binance's operations in Nigeria. Binance halted Naira transactions in March 2024 due to the legal issues. Anjarwalla fled to Kenya, while Gambaryan pleaded not guilty and cited a lack of executive authority over company decisions. He faced health issues during detention, including untreated malaria and a herniated disc. The Nigerian Federal Inland Revenue Service dropped tax charges in June 2024, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission dropped money laundering charges against Gambaryan in October 2024, shortly before his release.
