DOJ moves to dismiss charges against alleged $722M BitClub fraudster: Report
The Justice Department is reportedly preparing to drop charges against Matthew Goettsche, founder of BitClub Network, a crypto mining platform accused of running a $722 million fraud from 2014 to 2019. Court filings say both sides reached an agreement in principle, and Bloomberg Law reported that DOJ leadership directed prosecutors in New Jersey to dismiss the case with prejudice. Goettsche had faced trial on wire fraud conspiracy and unregistered securities charges. The move would be a notable shift in US crypto enforcement, especially since three former BitClub associates already pleaded guilty. It also fits a broader DOJ policy change after April 2025 guidance from Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche to end “regulation by prosecution” in the digital asset sector.
