ECB Plans Direct Investment In Tokenized Securities Using Pontes
Summary
The European Central Bank has started preparatory work to invest a small share of its own-funds portfolio in tokenized euro-denominated securities. This is separate from monetary policy and would target mainly euro-area sovereigns, regional governments, agencies, and European supranational issuers. Settlement would use Pontes, the Eurosystem’s new infrastructure for settling tokenized financial assets in central-bank money. No tokenized purchases have occurred yet. The ECB is only preparing, with execution details and timing to be decided after further review by the Executive Board. If implemented, this would mark an important step beyond pilots, as the ECB itself would become a direct user of tokenized settlement for its own portfolio.
