ECB says digital euro app will exceed EU accessibility standards
The ECB said its planned digital euro app will go beyond European Accessibility Act requirements. Features include improved visual design, full keyboard navigation, screen-reader support, timeout warnings, simplified language, error prevention, and reduced-motion options. The standalone app is intended as a backup if bank apps fail and to let users switch payment providers without learning a new interface. The digital euro is the EU’s proposed central bank digital currency, meant to complement cash with a public digital payment option across the euro area. The ECB has also selected 36 payment service providers for a 12-month pilot starting in the second half of 2027, before any issuance decision. The project has faced criticism over privacy and surveillance risks, which the ECB says will be addressed through safeguards.
