Ethereum Hit by 'Blobscriptions' in First Stress Test of Blockchain's New Data System
Summary
The Ethereum blockchain recently upgraded to create a dedicated space for storing data, known as "blobs," to reduce fees and congestion. However, a project called Ethscriptions caused a surge in Ethereum gas fees for blobs, with the base fee reaching 582 gwei ($266) before subsiding to around 18 gwei ($8.69). This surge tested the new blob market created by the EIP-4844 proposal. The blob space is crucial for layer-2 networks built atop Ethereum, and Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin noted that while blobs are not free, they remain much cheaper than the old system of parking data as "calldata" in a regular Ethereum transaction.
