Ethereum Name Service plans major .eth overhaul with one irreversible catch for domain holders

Summary

ENS has proposed activating ENSv2 without forcing current .eth holders to migrate. Existing names can remain on ENSv1 and be renewed; migration is permanent and transfers tokens to an unrecoverable smart contract. ENSv2 would handle new registrations and introduce separate registries for subdomains, more granular permissions, stablecoin payments, revised fees and a shorter grace period for migrated names. The DAO has not yet approved the proposal, and no launch date is set. ENS expects a temporary registration pause during the transition, while renewal availability during that period remains unclear. Wallets and apps will also need to update their resolution systems.
