EU plots digital push with July parliament vote
The European Parliament will vote on a technology sovereignty proposal from the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE), led by pro-Bitcoin lawmaker Sarah Knafo. The proposal, adopted on June 3, emphasizes the need for a European digital policy to address concerns about Europe lagging behind the US and China in key sectors like cloud computing, cybersecurity, and AI. It advocates for reducing barriers to private investment, promoting energy-efficient computing, and ensuring privacy in digital finance. The vote is anticipated in July, with Knafo expressing optimism about gaining majority support despite potential opposition from left-wing parties. Knafo also opposes the ECB's digital euro plans, advocating instead for a Bitcoin strategic reserve. ECB officials stress the necessity of a digital euro to counter US dollar stablecoins, while Knafo's views highlight a divide in the EU's digital strategy.
