FCA opens crypto authorization window ahead of 2027 UK regime
The UK Financial Conduct Authority has opened applications for crypto firms seeking authorization under a new regime set to begin on Oct. 25, 2027. Firms that want to keep operating in the UK should apply by the end of February 2027, and the FCA expects to rule on those applications before the regime starts. The new framework broadens FCA oversight beyond anti-money-laundering and financial promotion rules to cover areas such as stablecoin issuance, crypto trading platforms, and market abuse. The FCA says the regime is intended to improve consumer protection and give firms clearer operating rules. Industry groups welcomed the rollout but warned existing firms not to assume their current money-laundering registration will transfer automatically. Smaller and growing businesses may face the biggest challenges in meeting the new standards.
