Financial Data Giant S&P Global Moves Deeper Into Crypto With OpenZeppelin Deal

Summary

S&P Global has agreed to acquire OpenZeppelin, a smart contract security firm, to strengthen its risk assessment capabilities for tokenized and onchain financial products. The deal gives S&P access to OpenZeppelin’s security tools and technical expertise as banks and asset managers move more assets onto blockchain networks. S&P said the move fits its strategy of providing trusted data, benchmarks, and transparent risk assessment for digital asset markets. OpenZeppelin, founded in 2015, builds open-source smart contract libraries and offers security reviews and development services. S&P plans to use it to expand security assessments, benchmarks, and data services for the technical risks of onchain products. OpenZeppelin will remain a separate S&P Global unit, with CEO Demian Brener continuing to lead it. The acquisition comes amid rising institutional adoption of tokenized funds, deposits, stablecoin payments, and other blockchain-based financial products.
