Galaxy pledges $5M for developers quantum-proofing Bitcoin
Galaxy Digital is committing up to $5 million in grants to support open-source post-quantum cryptography work for Bitcoin. The funding targets quantum-resistant upgrade proposals, post-quantum cryptography, Bitcoin signature schemes, wallet and custodian migration tools, and formal security audits. Galaxy also created a quantum advisory council for its Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative, with members including Barry Sanders, Damien Bérubé, and Eran Tromer. The effort reflects growing concern that future cryptographically relevant quantum computers could threaten Bitcoin. Glassnode estimates about 30% of Bitcoin’s supply could be exposed, including 10% considered structurally unsafe and 20% operationally unsafe. Views on the timeline remain divided: some expect decades before a serious threat, while others believe Bitcoin may have only a few years to prepare. NIST’s post-quantum standards and recent research on hash-based signature schemes are seen as possible building blocks for a future migration.
