German finance ministry proposes 25% crypto tax starting 2028: report

Summary

Germany’s Finance Ministry has reportedly drafted a plan to tax cryptocurrency trading profits at the standard 25% flat rate starting in 2028. The proposal would apply to crypto assets purchased after Jan. 1, 2027, while assets bought before that date could keep the current rules. Under existing law, crypto gains are tax-free if the assets are held for more than 12 months, making Germany attractive for long-term holders. Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil previously said the overhaul could bring in about 2 billion euros in extra revenue.
