UN Security Council Will Get Advice on AI Risks From Tech Giants Building It
The UN Security Council is holding a rare briefing on AI risks, bringing together leaders from OpenAI, Anthropic, Hugging Face, AI safety researcher Yoshua Bengio, and invited Chinese firms DeepSeek and Moonshot. France is chairing the session, with concern focused on AI systems that could escape human control or be used for cyberattacks, election interference, or weapons design without human oversight. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei will join remotely after urging the industry to slow frontier AI development and expand outside safety review. His warning has drawn support from Sam Altman and Elon Musk, but also criticism from China and rejection from President Trump, who dismissed AI takeover fears as a hoax. The meeting is unlikely to produce binding outcomes, but it comes just before Trump’s planned talks with Xi Jinping, where AI safety is expected to be discussed alongside trade.
