Ethereum Founder Vitalik Buterin Says AI Won’t Doom Crypto Security
Vitalik Buterin argues AI will not doom cybersecurity and could instead strengthen crypto defenses. He says cybersecurity remains defense-favoring if systems are designed well, and that AI may make formal verification practical even for complex software by proving a program meets precise security requirements. He notes the main challenge is defining “secure” clearly, not proving it once defined. In crypto, developers are already using AI to scan code, find exploits, and verify bugs before attackers can exploit them. Recent examples include AI-assisted discovery of flaws in Zcash, Ethereum infrastructure, and Bitcoin-related software, with some vulnerabilities causing major losses or service suspensions. Buterin says Ethereum plans to expand AI-based verification to entire programs over the next few years, and that secure blockchains with scalability and privacy depend on this approach.
