'Bitcoin Is Burning': Red Team Turns to Chinese AI to Find Flaws
The Bitcoin Red Team is using AI models, especially Chinese ones like Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 and Z.ai’s GLM 5.2, to scan nearly the entire Bitcoin open-source ecosystem for security flaws. The volunteer group combines automated analysis with human review across wallets, Lightning apps, libraries, and other projects, then privately reports credible issues to maintainers before disclosure. Calle said the team has completed a broad initial scan and has filed 4,962 findings across 390 projects, including 85 critical and 635 high-severity issues, with many confirmed by developers. Lightning software proved especially difficult because of its complexity. The team also uses OpenAI and Anthropic models, but cited restrictions from U.S. providers as a barrier to security research, pushing greater reliance on downloadable Chinese models. Calle argued projects need their own AI audit pipelines and warned that unmaintained software is increasingly risky.
