Trump cost investors $4.7B through crypto ‘schemes’: Public Citizen

Summary

Public Citizen says Trump and his family’s digital asset ventures have left investors an estimated $4.7 billion underwater since 2022. The biggest losses came from the Official Trump (TRUMP) memecoin, which it estimates cost buyers $3.2 billion; World Liberty Financial’s USD1 stablecoin reportedly did not cause major losses. The group argues the memecoin losses mainly transferred wealth to early buyers. It also says Trump personally benefited heavily: about $7.2 million from NFT licensing and royalties, over $600 million from World Liberty token sales and an equity sale, $635 million in memecoin licensing fees, and $197 million from capital contributions to World Liberty, not including stakes he still holds. Public Citizen is calling for ethics rules in the CLARITY Act, saying a U.S. president and family should divest from crypto projects if the bill advances.
