Hoskinson says Vitalik’s AI warning could delay the internet’s quantum defenses
Charles Hoskinson criticized Vitalik Buterin’s warning that AI-driven mathematical breakthroughs could undermine lattice-based post-quantum cryptography. Hoskinson said decades of research have improved attacks on lattice systems without revealing a general break, and argued that NIST’s 2024 standards ML-KEM and ML-DSA account for known weaknesses. He opposed speculative proposals such as multiplying key sizes by ten and said hash-based cryptography can also face unforeseen attacks. The debate reflects different approaches to preparing for quantum threats: Buterin’s Ethereum roadmap favors hash-based signatures and proofs, while Hoskinson warned that abandoning lattice research could restrict options for encryption, privacy and secure communications.
