Inside the 'Shielded Bitcoin' paper that proposes private BTC payments using Zcash tech
Researchers proposed Shielded Bitcoin, a system that would use Zcash-style encrypted notes and cryptographic proofs to conceal bitcoin payment amounts and participants while publishing data on Bitcoin. Independent software would verify private transfers rather than Bitcoin nodes, so a Bitcoin confirmation would not guarantee the private payment passed the system’s checks. Users could rebuild payment histories from the public record and share viewing keys with auditors. The 56-page paper leaves deposits and withdrawals for future work, meaning it does not yet explain how ordinary BTC enters or exits the system. Critics cited synthetic-fund risks, a trusted setup, visible timing and fees, and higher transaction costs; the authors estimate private transfers would be about four times larger than ordinary transactions. No launch date has been announced.
