Tether’s $190 billion USDT stablecoin is coming back to the Bitcoin network this month

Summary

Tether-backed Utexo plans to begin issuing USDT on Bitcoin this month, bringing the stablecoin back to the network where it launched in 2014. Utexo says it holds a commercial license to issue USDT and will provide APIs and other infrastructure for exchanges, wallets and payment providers. Its RGB-based design keeps transaction details off Bitcoin’s public ledger while anchoring asset ownership to Bitcoin UTXOs. Proposed uses include private transfers, direct BTC-USDT swaps and lending against native bitcoin. Unlike USDT on account-based blockchains, these assets cannot be frozen directly; Utexo says it will blacklist suspect UTXOs so service providers can block their redemption. The company plans to expand to Lightning next, with a possible role for USDT in paying network fees.
