Mexico quadruple homicide tied to alleged Bitcoin robbery attempt
Mexican prosecutors say two suspects killed four people in Atizapán de Zaragoza while trying to locate a cold wallet they believed contained millions in Bitcoin. The victims were Jonathan Meléndez, keyboardist for Camilo Séptimo, his pregnant wife, their daughter, and an employee; the family dog was also killed. One suspect was reportedly a business associate of a victim and allegedly used that connection to enter the home. The two men are due in court to decide whether criminal proceedings continue. If convicted, they could face 25 to 70 years in prison per homicide count. The case fits a broader rise in “wrench attacks,” where criminals use violence or threats to steal crypto wallet access. Reported home invasions and other physical attacks targeting crypto holders have increased sharply, with criminals stealing tens of millions of dollars in crypto in early 2026 alone.
