MiCA deadline likely to shift smaller crypto apps into licensed custody rails
MiCA’s July 1, 2026 deadline is pushing European crypto firms to choose between becoming licensed CASPs, winding down, or outsourcing regulated functions to licensed providers. BitGo Europe’s partnership with Warsaw-based Bielik.io shows one likely path: keep the user-facing app while moving custody, onboarding, trading, settlement, and transfers onto a regulated infrastructure stack. ESMA says firms cannot outsource custody to unauthorized entities or route EU clients through unlicensed third-country providers. This model may help smaller platforms stay live, but it also concentrates control over the rails—custody, KYC, transfers, asset support, and policy rules—into fewer licensed providers. Poland’s unclear implementation and Lithuania’s earlier transition deadline show the pressure on legacy national VASP regimes. MiCA may preserve access for users, but at the cost of greater dependence on a smaller set of infrastructure providers.
