Modern robots impress, but are years away from replacing humans
AI robots are advancing quickly, but full human replacement is still years away. Experts say the most vulnerable jobs are repetitive physical tasks in structured settings and some administrative/document-processing work. Humanoid robots can sort packages and clean rooms, but they still lag humans in reliability, speed, safety, cost, and handling unexpected situations. They also need charging, maintenance, and supervision. Robots are already strong in factories and warehouses, where conditions are controlled, and demand for factory robots has doubled over the past decade. By contrast, dynamic environments like homes remain much harder because humans adapt better to changing conditions and judgment-heavy tasks. Experts see near-term change as selective automation rather than mass replacement. Potential benefits include improving safety, filling labor shortages, and reducing burdensome work, but widespread automation would also force major social and economic adjustments.
