More Ready Than Bitcoin? How Zcash Developers Are Preparing for the Quantum Threat
Zcash developers view quantum computing as an active threat, particularly because a sufficiently advanced quantum computer could break the cryptography protecting user privacy, expose past transactions, and even enable coin counterfeiting. To address this, Zcash has focused on long-term preparations, evolving its security model and maintaining a structure that allows for coordinated, network-wide responses. One key proposal is “quantum recoverability,” which aims to give users time to recover and spend their funds even if quantum computers defeat current cryptographic protections, by allowing the network to pause and upgrade in response to an attack. Much of the protocol work to support this has already been completed, with remaining tasks centered on wallet software updates. Unlike Bitcoin, which faces challenges in organizing swift, cohesive upgrades across its distributed network, Zcash's governance and commitment to privacy allow for faster collective action. Zcash is not yet quantum-resistant, but further improvements are expected soon as attention to the threat grows industry-wide. Zcash developers believe readiness and adaptability—not just technical tools—are key to confronting the quantum threat.
