Mt. Gox Moves $739M in Bitcoin as Repayment Deadline Looms
Mt. Gox moved 10,422.65 BTC, worth more than $739 million, from cold storage as Bitcoin slipped below $70,000. Most funds went to a new wallet, and 116.30 BTC went to a known Mt. Gox hot wallet. The transfers do not show any sale or a new creditor payout. The exchange’s trustee has until Oct. 31, 2026 to finish repayments after delays in the rehabilitation process. Mt. Gox collapsed in 2014 after about 850,000 BTC went missing, leaving creditors waiting years for compensation. A court approved a civil rehabilitation plan in 2021, allowing partial repayments through exchanges. Bitcoin’s decline was driven more by broader market pressure, including ETF outflows, geopolitical tension, and risk-off sentiment. Remaining Mt. Gox holdings are about 35,000 BTC, and market observers say that amount is unlikely to move price much unless sold quickly. The bigger short-term impact is often speculation triggered by wallet movements.
