NEAR Adds Staking-Based Payments For AI Compute Credits
NEAR launched a staking-based payment model for NEAR AI that lets users lock NEAR tokens to receive monthly compute credits instead of paying with credit cards or standard cloud billing. The service provides access to 43 hosted AI models, including models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. Tokens are not spent; users retain ownership while their staked amount determines how much compute they can use. The model aims to give NEAR a clearer utility beyond speculation by tying token lockup directly to AI usage. It may be especially relevant for developers and autonomous agents that need programmable access to model APIs. The main uncertainty is adoption: users may still prefer direct API billing, cloud credits, or enterprise contracts. Key questions include credit predictability, model pricing, volatility risk, and whether the system attracts users outside the NEAR ecosystem.
