North Korean Crypto Hackers Have Stolen $3B Since 2017, Says UN Security Council: Report
Cryptocurrency hacks linked to North Korea amounted to $3 billion between 2017 and 2023, according to a United Nations (UN) Security Council study. The UN is investigating 17 crypto heists in 2023, potentially attributable to North Korea, valued at over $750 million. From 2017 to 2023, there were 58 suspected cyberattacks on crypto-related firms. North Korea reportedly generates about 50% of its foreign currency income from these cyberattacks, which are used to fund its weapons programs. The country has been using the crypto industry to evade sanctions, leading to its label as "the world's most prolific cyber-thief." The Lazarus Group, a hacker organization linked to North Korea, is also believed to have stolen $3 billion in cryptocurrency over the past six years.
