Nvidia, Meta, and Microsoft Tell Washington: Don't Kill Open-Source AI
Twenty-five companies, including Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, Andreessen Horowitz, Hugging Face, IBM, and Dell, urged Washington not to restrict open-weight AI models. They argue that publishing model weights supports U.S. AI leadership, safety, cybersecurity, innovation, and sovereignty, while heavy restrictions would concentrate power in closed labs. The letter compares open AI to the open-source software movement and says openness may be a major path to AI safety. It also defends distillation as a normal improvement technique that should be governed by targeted rules, not blanket bans. The appeal comes amid U.S. debate over possible limits on Chinese open-weight models and after a Hugging Face security incident showed open models could be useful for local investigation when closed models failed safety checks. OpenAI and Anthropic did not sign the letter.
