'Privacy Is Hygiene,’ Says Ethereum Creator Vitalik Buterin After Bank Data Leak
A cyberattack on mortgage technology vendor SitusAMC led to the exposure of client data from major U.S. banks including JPMorgan, Citi, and Morgan Stanley. The breach, involving unauthorized access and exfiltration of accounting records, legal agreements, and customer data, is under investigation. In response, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin emphasized that privacy should be treated as essential digital “hygiene” rather than an optional feature, urging for privacy to be a baseline requirement. Buterin has advocated for enhanced privacy tools in Ethereum, such as stealth addresses, selective disclosure, and zero-knowledge proofs, to limit data exposure. The Ethereum Foundation recently launched Kohaku, a privacy-focused browser wallet and SDK. Across the crypto industry, there is increasing focus on default privacy solutions—from new protocol tools and privacy layer-2 chains in Ethereum to Bitcoin’s Taproot upgrades and Solana’s Light Protocol. Privacy coins like Zcash have also gained renewed attention. The incident reinforces ongoing concerns regarding privacy risks in both traditional finance and cryptocurrencies.
