Progressives Are Losing The Crypto Future
Donald Trump’s call for the U.S. to become “the crypto capital of the planet” reflects a growing conservative embrace of cryptocurrency as a political and economic tool. Crypto-aligned PACs contributed over $14 million to the 2022 midterms, with 25% of Republican-leaning men investing in crypto compared to 16% of left-leaning individuals. Progressives largely remain indifferent due to concerns over fraud, tax evasion, and energy waste, as well as a focus on equity and systemic reform. Despite skepticism, blockchain can support left-leaning values through projects like Solana and Gitcoin. To influence the crypto landscape, progressives need to engage actively, moving from critique to contribution by piloting projects and forming partnerships. If they remain passive, they risk losing relevance as crypto infrastructure becomes integral to civic tools and voting systems. Input from all political perspectives is essential for a fair and democratic blockchain future.
