Roman Storm's Tornado Cash Retrial Pushed to April 2027
Roman Storm’s retrial on the two counts a jury deadlocked on is now set for April 26, 2027 in the Southern District of New York, after Judge Katherine Polk Failla delayed it by more than six months and excluded the gap under the Speedy Trial Act. The new schedule runs from expert disclosures on February 5, 2027 to a final conference on April 20. Failla tied the delay to Storm’s pending acquittal motion and his request for a later date; prosecutors had sought an October 2026 retrial. A Manhattan jury convicted Storm in August 2025 of conspiring to operate an unlicensed money transmitting business and hung on conspiracy to launder money and conspiracy to violate sanctions, which together carry up to 40 years. Storm says the case is meant to deter the broader crypto industry. He points to Justice Department remarks about using the prosecution to “set an example,” and to evidence he says showed Chainalysis had its own Tornado Cash relayer. Storm still awaits sentencing on the money-transmitting count.
