Russia expands crypto mining ban to Moscow through 2032

Russia is expanding cryptocurrency mining restrictions to Moscow, the Moscow Region, and parts of Kursk Region. Resolution No. 936, signed July 25, 2026, updates a December 2024 order and sets the new ban to begin on Aug. 15, 2026, lasting through Dec. 31, 2032. The restricted Kursk areas include eight municipal districts and the city of Lgov. The move extends earlier mining limits already imposed in other regions, including parts of Buryatia and Zabaykalsky Krai, where bans run from April 1, 2026, to March 15, 2031. The expansion is driven by concerns over electricity supply and rising power demand, especially around Moscow, where the energy ministry cited 65 connected data centers with 734 MW of combined capacity.
