Senate Overwhelmingly Passes CBDC Ban Attached to Bipartisan Housing Bill
The U.S. Senate approved a bill banning the development of a central bank digital currency (CBDC), or “digital dollar,” until 2031. This ban was attached to a broader housing bill, the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, which passed in the Senate with strong bipartisan support (89-10). CBDCs are government-issued cryptocurrencies intended as cash equivalents, but they have faced opposition in the U.S., mainly from conservatives citing privacy concerns. The proposed CBDC ban is not yet law, as the bill must also pass the House, where there is significant disagreement, particularly over unrelated housing provisions. Even if both chambers approve the bill, President Trump has threatened to veto it unless lawmakers also pass the SAVE Act, a separate voting reform measure currently facing resistance.
