Slovenia’s finance ministry floats 25% tax on crypto transactions
Slovenia’s Finance Ministry is proposing a 25% tax on crypto trading profits for residents, applicable when selling cryptocurrency for fiat or purchasing goods and services. Crypto-to-crypto trades and transfers between the same user's wallets would be exempt. Taxpayers must record all transactions for annual returns, with profits calculated by subtracting purchase prices from sale prices. Finance Minister Klemen Boštjančič argues that taxing crypto trading is necessary as it is currently untaxed. Opposition lawmaker Jernej Vrtovec criticizes the proposal, claiming it could hinder crypto growth and drive young people and capital abroad. The public consultation period for the bill ends on May 5, with potential implementation on January 1, 2026. Slovenia previously introduced a 10% tax on crypto withdrawals in 2023, while capital gains from occasional trading remain untaxed. The number of crypto users in Slovenia is expected to reach approximately 98,000 by 2025, with projected market revenue of $2.8 million.
