Solana Foundation launches framework for protocol-level governance

Summary

The Solana Foundation launched Solana Governance Proposals (SGPs), a new protocol-level governance framework that lets validators propose and vote on core network decisions onchain using stake-weighted voting power. SGPs are meant to capture ecosystem sentiment and major directional choices, while Solana Improvement Documents (SIMDs) remain focused on technical implementation details. To reach a formal vote, a proposal must first gain support from validators representing at least 15% of actively staked SOL. Validators with at least 100,000 SOL delegated can open a proposal. Delegators can also override their validator’s vote and cast their own on a proposal. The framework is intended to make major Solana decisions more transparent and community-driven, reducing reliance on centralized coordination.
