Treasury Department Sanctions Over 130 ISIS-Affiliated Crypto Wallets on Tron
The U.S. Treasury sanctioned 134 cryptocurrency wallet addresses linked to ISIS-K, the Islamic State affiliate in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Central Asia. Most of them — 131 — were on the Tron blockchain, with three on Monero. Blockchain analysis found the Tron wallets received more than $1.4 million since 2023 and sent over $880,000. Tether has frozen balances tied to all 131 sanctioned Tron addresses. ISIS-K’s media wing has used crypto donation appeals through websites and messaging platforms, and some of the wallets sent funds to Syria-based exchanges. The action highlights Tron’s repeated use by sanctioned actors. It also comes amid worsening ties between Tron founder Justin Sun and Donald Trump’s family after disputes over World Liberty Financial. Separately, OFAC sanctioned two Brazilians and four companies tied to PCC, alleging they used crypto to move over $30 million in drug proceeds from the U.S. back to Brazil.
