UK FCA sets crypto authorization guidance ahead of September application window
The UK Financial Conduct Authority has issued final guidance explaining when crypto-related activities will need authorization under the UK’s new regulatory regime. The guidance covers qualifying stablecoin issuance, crypto trading platforms, dealing and arranging transactions, custody of cryptoassets, and staking arrangements. Firms must assess whether their business falls inside the FCA perimeter and what permissions they need; existing registrations will not automatically carry over. The FCA will begin accepting applications on Sept. 30, with a Feb. 28, 2027 deadline for transitional arrangements before the regime takes effect on Oct. 25, 2027. The guidance is part of the UK’s wider move to bring cryptoassets under FCA oversight, alongside ongoing work on tokenization and a planned digital asset strategy.
